Fremont Canyon Fun

Continuing in our celebration of California Mountain Bike Month, this past weekend we joined with our friends at OC MTB Races in hosting an XC Ride/Run event at Fremont Canyon, a managed access property in the OC Parks system. This event was done in the spirit of our Open Space Explore events of the past year, a special day hosted by you and for you, our recreation user groups. And to add to the cool factor, we did it with trail runners because we all love being out there together.

We were blessed with awesome early summer weather (i.e. cloud cover) for the majority of this robust trail event. At 7:15a, Mike sent the runner contingent out to the trails. Our hats are off to these folks as some did the full 17m / 4k elevation loop and the rest did the "smaller?" 14m route. That's a lot on a bike....let alone in your running togs.

At 8:00a, Mike launched our MTB family on to the trail as well. As mentioned, we mapped a robust route and our rider family was thrilled to pretty much climb all the way to the third aid station before heading back. Fremont represents a physically challenging and amazingly beautiful backcountry with constant views East to the Santa Ana's, West over the County and even North to the recently opened Gypsum Canyon. It was awesome to see runners and bikers cheering each other on as we shared our exploration together.

As everyone finished out their time on the trail, our taco team fired up the goods for the promised post ride/run lunch. It was a great time to share stories, to catch up with friends, to meet new cool peeps, and to learn about what else is in store for the OC outdoor recreation communities.

Special thanks to all the volunteers, we had three aid stations with great folks that sacrificied enjoying the ride themselves so that their friends could be refueled for the next miles. "It takes a village" and we have one of the best!

Awesome events like this XC Ride/Run, the Open Space Explore it emulates and the many other activities we try to present to our MTB community, don't happen without a lot of passion (and work) from your OCMTBA team and the community volunteers. Thank you to the volunteers, to Mike & Alison at OC MTB Races and to the OCMTBA board for making it all possible! See you on the next one soon!
