It's California Mountain Bike Month!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

California Mountain Biking & Trail Stewardship Month Declared for June 2025

Sacramento, CA (June 10, 2024) – The California Mountain Biking Coalition (CAMTB) and the California Trails Foundation (CATF) are pleased to announce the recent introduction of Senate Concurrent Resolution 94 (SCR 94) by Senator Catherine Blakespear (D), co-authored by Senator Brian Jones (R), Assemblymember Gail Pellerin (D), and Assemblymember Damon Connolly (D). The bipartisan resolution, sponsored by CAMTB and the California Trails Foundation, designates June 2025 as “California Mountain Biking & Trail Stewardship Month.”

The resolution recognizes California’s deep-rooted history as the birthplace of mountain biking and the significant contributions of the trail stewardship community to all who enjoy outdoor recreation in the state. SCR 94 highlights mountain biking as a health-promoting activity that enhances cardiovascular fitness, strength, and endurance, while also underscoring its mental health benefits, stress reduction, and community-building qualities.

The resolution further acknowledges the extensive volunteer efforts of mountain biking clubs and organizations in maintaining trails and supporting public lands, and emphasizes the substantial economic impact of mountain biking, which contributes over $2.3 billion annually to California’s economy. It also celebrates the growth of high school mountain biking programs, the inclusion of mountain biking in the 2028 Los Angeles Summer Olympics, and the increased accessibility of the sport due to advancements in bike technology, trail navigation apps, e-bikes, and adaptive bikes.

“We’re absolutely thrilled about the return and expanded focus of California Mountain Biking and Trail Stewardship Month,” said Steve Messer, Board President of CAMTB. “Our ability to experience California’s incredible natural beauty is so dependent on our trail infrastructure. It’s only right that we recognize, cherish, and protect these trails just as we do our environmental and cultural treasures. Having the legislature’s broad support presents a fantastic opportunity to educate all Californians, including our lawmakers, about the numerous benefits of riding bikes on trails. It also lets us promote and celebrate mountain biking's rich history, vibrant culture, and significant contributions to the Golden State.”

SCR 94 is scheduled to be read on the Senate Floor on June 19, 2025. CAMTB’s delegate team, including its members of its Teen Ambassadors team, will be present to mark the occasion. CAMTB applauds Blakespear, Jones, Connolly and Pellerin for advancing this important resolution.

“SCR 94 is a vital step in recognizing and supporting the immense value of sustainable recreation to our communities and our environment,” said Katie Hawkins, Program Director for Outdoor Alliance California. “By declaring June as California Mountain Biking and Trail Stewardship Month, we highlight the critical need for access and the continued investment in and care for our public lands.”[1]

CAMTB encourages everyone across the state to get out on the trails this June, support local trail stewardship organizations, and join in the celebrations for #CAMTBmonth throughout June 2025. For updates, follow CAMTB on social media or visit camtb.org/camtb-month-2025.

“SCR 94 shines an important light on responsible trail use and stewardship, and serves as an inspiring example for other state legislatures to emulate,” said Rachel Fussell, Senior Manager of Recreation Policy for PeopleForBikes. “This resolution demonstrates the power of recognizing the economic, health, and environmental benefits of trails, underscoring a national need for sustained investment in responsible outdoor recreation.”[2]

About CAMTB/CATF

The California Mountain Biking Coalition (CAMTB) was formed in 2019 as a 501(c)(4) nonprofit organization that advocates for cycling, trails, and public lands. CAMTB is a coalition of 39 bike-friendly trail stewardship organizations from around California. It serves as a unifying, statewide voice for cyclists and stewards. CAMTB partners with its member organizations, as well as many regional and national advocacy organizations, to advocate for improved recreational amenities, management policies, and legislation that benefits the recreation community and the environment.

The California Trails Foundation, CAMTB’s sister 501 (c) (3) partner, believes that every person deserves an opportunity to improve their quality of life through trails. CATF was created by an inspired group of trail advocates who recognized that trails represent the connective tissue for our shared outdoor experiences. Trails connect communities, trails improve lives, and trails offer limitless health and quality of life benefits.
