First pump track in OC

Updated: Dec 10, 2024

Last night was a pretty awesome one for the MTB community. With a vote of 5-0, the San Clemente City Council approved to accept donations from Friends, Shimano and OCMTBA (with support from IMBA). AND they chose to match that effort with funds from their own accounts. The Richard T Steed Memorial MTB Hub is now a reality, a well featured pump track is getting built at the "San Clemente Singletracks" trailhead for all of us to enjoy.

We filled the council chambers with our MTB family dressed in tShirts and Hoodies adorned with a pretty clear message "San Clemente Pump Track, Together We Ride 2025". When it was our time, a set of our best came up and made public comment. Dustin from Shimano, Cam Zink, Milo from OC Bikeworks, local coach Brandon, Natalie on behalf of the skaters along with Bridget and Mikah representing our large youth contingent.

Everyone was phenomenal in their presentations and together it made our message very clear. Our passion is material to local cities, they are home to pros, bike industry, local bike stores and a plethora of young athletes. We are just as much a sport to support as any other, our coaches and kids can deseve a sanctioned venue to develop their skills.

The City listened and then discussed this most important agenda item. Councilmember Duncan said it well "when you have unexpected fusion of investment, a vibrant community, a location at an incredible trailhead" you have to be in favor. Councilmember Loeffler use the word "stoked" to capture his peers view on this project. And as we rounded the dias, it was clear the enthusiasm of our attendees was embraced in the Council and their staff. The vote was held, the unanimous decision carried, and the applause and smiles abounded.

Thank you City of San Clemente for boldly being the first in Orange County to invest in bike, to work with us in partnership to bring the pump track that anchors the MTB hub to a reality!
